A few weeks back, my 12-year-old son messed something up. I don’t remember what. I think he didn’t do some homework or something. As a consequence, I had him write me a research paper on what he wanted to be when he grew up. When I told him the assignment, his frown turned up a bit and he said, “Dad, this isn’t a punishment, it’s a FUN-ishment.” He ran off. (more…)

In every problem in our lives, one thing is constant. Every time someone does us dirty or messes something up, every time some stupid system or rule gets changed and it affects us, one thing is constant. When our job prevents us from making a workout or eating right – when outside forces keep us from spending time with our family and doing what we want to in our lives, one thing is constant. Years ago, I was training for a mixed martial arts fight. I wasn’t a world beater, but I was a few years and a dozen fights into a professional fighting career in the minor leagues. I was preparing for a fight and a new guy showed up at the gym. Nice guy, good athlete, worked hard. He had good balance, wasn’t afraid to get in the mix, and this was his first go at organized training. He had been there a few weeks when he asked if I wanted to spar a few rounds. He told me he had never sparred before. (more…)
September 6th brought two watershed events to my life. Neither really should have taken me by surprise, I knew they were coming.
The first was the Endeavor Team Challenge, 2014. I had done the inaugural event last year, so I had some idea of what to expect. The race is about 32 hours covering 40+ miles while carrying all your gear and nourishment. The race is composed of long hikes, rock climbing, traversing mountains, swimming, strength and mental challenges, obstacle courses, running, kayaking, land navigation etc. The year before, the race had been one of the toughest things I’ve ever accomplished.
