I swam in the Alcatraz Invitational on September 14th, 2014. This was a nine month hero’s journey that started with me unable to swim two laps in a pool in January. Check out how it went.

September 6th brought two watershed events to my life. Neither really should have taken me by surprise, I knew they were coming.

The first was the Endeavor Team Challenge, 2014. I had done the inaugural event last year, so I had some idea of what to expect. The race is about 32 hours covering 40+ miles while carrying all your gear and nourishment. The race is composed of long hikes, rock climbing, traversing mountains, swimming, strength and mental challenges, obstacle courses, running, kayaking, land navigation etc. The year before, the race had been one of the toughest things I’ve ever accomplished. See, back in January, I accepted the challenge to sign up for the September 14th Alcatraz Invitational (a swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco). I’ve known Rick Randolph for more than half my life.

We first met when I was 17 years old, the summer before my freshman year at Cal Poly. I was a camp counselor at Vaughn Hitchcock Wrestling Camp. Rick was a camper. This was the summer before his senior year in high school. We worked out a few times together that summer, then went 16 years before crossing paths again. (more…)
